The Chef That Ran Herself Healthy
Today found me eagerly tying up my boots in anticipation of one of my favorite passages of time, hiking. The freedom experienced under a canopy of trees is like no other. The utter peacefulness in getting lost in your thoughts amidst the dangers of missed trails and injury are so unique and satisfying to me. While running provides me with such a sense of accomplishment that I can’t help but be proud of, hiking is so much more.
Accomplishing a hike is like a drug to me, I never feel more powerful or successful then I do when I place my dusty boot alongside my car’s tire at the bottom of the trail. The sheer willpower and strength to summit a mountain – it’s so amazing, simply freeing of all life’s stresses. Absolute love.
The rock faces I stared up today were a little more something than usual. Maybe it was the fact that I climbed them with more ease than I ever had before, proof that I am in the best shape of my life. Or perhaps it was that I sat on the summit happily munching on fruit while surrounded by others chewing on granola bars and drinking Gatorade. Because, let me tell you, I felt healthier in those twenty minutes chomping on grapes while others sucked on sugar, than I have in months. Power comes from within and today I definitely felt like I was back in control!
Most of my trips are done alone as I thoroughly enjoy the peace I find in hiking but on occasion I am joined by someone else. At times I think it’s because my family thinks I’m crazy to head out by myself. Other times, like today, I am joined by a friend that is as completely, crazy in love with scaling peaks as I am.
As I followed her up the side of a mountain and back down after standing at 3,600 feet I thought many times to myself, ‘If my pregnant friend can summit a mountain, why can’t others simply get off the couch?‘
